State Conference Registration has Begun

Posted on February 15, 2010 in Conferences, General, State Chapter

Dear PBL Members and Advisers:

The 40th Annual State Leadership Conference of Arizona Phi Beta Lambda will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 16-17, at the University of Arizona in Tucson.  Conference activities will take place in the University’s Harvill building, near the Student Union.  This is the premier event in Arizona PBL, and all members should plan on attending.  Conference activities will include competitive events, workshops, and the election of our new State Officer Team.  The conference will culminate with our annual Awards Banquet (an Italian themed buffet), the presentation of awards, and the State Officer Installation Ceremony.

Members also planning on attending the PBL National Leadership Conference (NLC) to be held on July 9-12, in Nashville, Tennessee can guarantee their placement in the event(s) of their choice at the NLC by placing in competitive events.

All conference activities will be held on the U of A campus, except for the social event on Friday night at Sakura and Golf-N-Stuff.  Please see the enclosed registration materials for a parking map, preliminary schedule, and registration information.  A final schedule of events will be sent to each chapter prior to the conference.  Registration entry forms will be due from each chapter on March 11.  Payments for conference registration fees will be due by April 9.   All members competing in Team Events and those taking 4 written tests will need to take at least one test on Friday.  Also, all members competing in Job Interview, Future Business Executive, or Future Business Teacher will need to have their materials turned in for judging on Friday afternoon.  Please refer to the preliminary schedule and guidelines for more information.

We will be following the FBLA-PBL Dress Code for all events on Saturday, so please inform your members that professional attire will be required.  Professional or formal attire will be appropriate for the Awards Banquet.  Business Casual will be appropriate dress for all activities on Friday.

The registration information should have been emailed to you by Mike Manion.  If you did not receive that email or you have any questions, please email me at mikeazpbl@cox.net

Posted on October 13, 2009 in State Chapter

We are pleased to announce that Alexandria Duran from Eastern Arizona College has been appointed to fill the vacant State Secretary position. As a former FBLA state officer, she has demonstrated tremendous experience both as a leader and as a dedicated contributor to FBLA-PBL. We are looking forward to working with her for the remainder of the academic year.

Vacant Officer Position

Posted on September 28, 2009 in General, State Chapter

State President Josh Belhumeur and State Officer Liason John Tyler are looking to fill a vacant state officer position (position of State Secretary). If you are interested in being a state officer, please email Josh (president@azpbl.org) and John (john@azpbl.org) an email with the subject of “State Officer Application” and attach a one-page resume. Make sure your resume includes any relevant FBLA/PBL leadership experience, as well as any further work or school related experiences, your major and GPA, and your contact information.

Prior to applying for this position, please make sure you meet all requirements:

  • You must have a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • You must be able to prioritize PBL to the best of your abilities.
  • You must be able to attend an online meeting October 21st at 8pm
  • We prefer you be available to attend an in-person meeting in Tempe, AZ on November 21st at 9:00am

Also keep in mind there will be more in-person and online state officer meetings throughout the year. In-person meetings always fall on a Saturday morning and online meetings are democratically discussed and picked among the state officer team. We meet approximately once a month, alternating between in-person and online.

The state secretary has two primary functions: to take minutes/notes at all of our meetings and to promote communication (including maintaining our website and social networks). No web design knowledge is required for this position, we utilize a blogging platform for easy updates through our site. We are looking for strong verbal and written communication skills and proven leadership potential.

APPLICATIONS ARE DUE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9TH.

John and Josh will schedule time for a phone/Skype interview with you between the 12th and the 16th. We will be announcing our pick on October 16th or 17th.

If you have any questions, you may email Josh or John as well.

Chapter Presidents and Advisers Meeting

Posted on August 28, 2009 in Local Chapters, State Chapter

We will be holding an online meeting for Chapter Presidents and Advisers. The goal of the meeting is to discuss and coordinate recruitment efforts between the state and local chapters. We ask that only one member (preferably the President, but another representative is acceptable) and one adviser from each chapter attend that chat so it does not get too crowded. It is an informal and open chat and requires no preparation other than any suggestions you may want to have prepared. The chat is:

August31st (Monday)
8:00 PM
AZPBL Chatroom:

Understanding the New Website

Posted on August 24, 2009 in General, State Chapter

The Arizona PBL web site has been updated to match our fresh/modern look, but more importantly its now running off a Wordpress blog. Now you will be able to comment on articles, search the web site, review archives, and more. Over the next week there will be a lot of additions to the site as we slowly transition over to this new platform. Please bear with us.

Why Wordpress?

We wanted to transition azpbl.org over to a content management system (CMS) to make updates and posts as quick and painless as a possible. With Wordpress, one of the most popular blogging platforms on the internet, we will be able to better manage content on the web site and facilitate contributions from the top down. This allows all the contributors to the web site to write posts with ease in a simplistic web-based interface. That means more frequent updates and in the end, a more robust and complete web site for Arizona PBL.

How does this new site affect me?

Switching to Wordpress actually gives all users more power in shaping the content of the web site. As a guest or member of AZ PBL, you may comment on any piece of content posted on the web site. In fact, we encourage it. This will promote healthy conversation about what AZ PBL is doing. If you are a chapter president, you can even post content pieces to the site. Just register (using the link under tools to the right) and notify the State President (president@azpbl.org) that you want author status on the web site. Once you are given the proper permissions, you will be able to login, access the site admin, and write content. This content will then be maintained in a draft state until one of the editors (state officers or advisers) publishes it live and on the site. We hope that chapter presidents can write interesting articles about what their local chapters are doing.

What can I expect in the future?

Here are some ideas that will probably be implemented sooner rather than later.

  • AZPBL image gallery fed by Flickr
  • Alumni Directory (we will be working to integrate what we previously had as a membership directory into the wordpress engine, hopefully with some further improvements)
  • Archive of competitive event winners. We will be integrating competitive event winner lists directly into wordpress as posts categorized under “Awards.”
  • Document Library

Your ideas and feedback, as always, are much appreciated.
